The future is never a straight line – and neither are the answers that shape the world around us.

When we asked our colleagues to share their thoughts, feelings, and memories about being mentors in the Step into your Future program for law students, rolled out by BACIU PARTNERS in 2025, we were curious to see what would emerge. Each of them chose the questions that resonated most and replied in their own voice.

What followed was a mix of insights, unexpected angles, and candid reflections on what truly shapes a lawyer’s journey. Sometimes sharp, sometimes witty, always authentic.

We are pleased to present Step into Answers, the series of heartfelt conversations showing how mentorship amplifies the sound of knowledge.

Our first guest: Iunia Epure, Senior Associate:

• Do you still remember the first time someone gave you an opportunity at the beginning of your career? How do you wish to be, today, for a student, in your role as mentor?

Iunia: I will never forget the support and guidance I received in the early years of my career. I still remember one of the most valuable pieces of advice my coordinator gave me back then: to take initiative, to be the one who comes up with solutions, and not to wait for answers from those around me.

Building on that advice, in my role as mentor I have tried to pass on the same approach to students: to stay involved, to be curious, and to make the most of the opportunity to spend a full month alongside us every day. I believe that a proactive attitude is one of the most valuable qualities they can develop from the very beginning—and perhaps most importantly, one they should preserve throughout their entire career.

• What was one unexpected surprise from a student—be it a question, a reaction, or an attitude?

During the project, I must admit I had a very pleasant surprise right from the interview stage, when one of the candidates, with remarkable ease, asked us: “What were you like when you were students?” I was both surprised and delighted by the relaxed and open attitude he showed.

Iunia: I believe this is a clear sign that new generations are increasingly comfortable in such contexts and manage to engage in dialogue with naturalness, without feeling intimidated—a quality I personally find very valuable.

• If students were to complete this program with just one thought in mind, what would you want it to be?

Iunia: I would love for each of the students to complete their internship with us holding on to the idea that the life of a lawyer is beautiful, dynamic, and full of challenges that help us better understand ourselves as individuals and grow into the best version of who we can be. Even if, at times, they caught us during busier moments in the office, I hope they were able to see beyond the intense pace and understand the passion, energy, and genuine rewards that this profession brings.

• Îți mai amintiești prima dată când cineva ți-a oferit o oportunitate la început de drum în carieră? Cum îți dorești să fii tu, astăzi, pentru un student, în calitate de mentor?

Iunia: Nu voi uita niciodată sprijinul și îndrumarea pe care le-am primit în primii ani ai carierei mele. Îmi aduc aminte și acum unul dintre sfaturile valoroase de atunci pe care coordonatorul meu mi l-a spus, și anume să dau dovadă de inițiativă, să fiu eu cea care vine cu soluția și să nu aștept răspunsuri de la cei din jur.

Ei bine, pornind de la acest sfat, în rolul meu de mentor am încercat să le transmit studenților aceeași abordare: să fie implicați, să fie curioși și să profite la maximum de oportunitatea de a fi alături de noi zi de zi, timp de o lună. Cred că o atitudine proactivă este una dintre cele mai valoroase calități pe care le pot dezvolta încă de la început și poate, cel mai important, să o păstreze de-a lungul întregii cariere.

• Care a fost o surpriză neașteptată din partea unui student — o întrebare, o reacție, o atitudine?

Iunia: În cadrul proiectului, recunosc că am avut o surpriză foarte plăcută încă din etapa de interviu când unul dintre candidați, cu o relaxare remarcabilă, ne-a întrebat „Cum erați voi când erați studente?”. M-a surprins și, în același timp, m-a bucurat atitudinea relaxată și deschisă de care a dat dovadă.

Cred că acesta este un semn clar că noile generații sunt tot mai confortabile în astfel de contexte și reușesc să abordeze dialogul cu naturalețe, fără a se simți intimidați — o calitate pe care eu o consider foarte valoroasă.

• Dacă studenții ar finaliza acest program cu un singur gând în minte, care ai vrea să fie acela?

Iunia: Mi-ar plăcea ca fiecare dintre studenți să finalizeze stagiul alături de noi cu gândul că viața de avocat este frumoasă, dinamică și plină de provocări care ne ajută să ne cunoaștem mai bine ca indivizi și să ne dezvoltăm spre o cea mai bună versiune a noastră. Chiar dacă, uneori, ne-au surprins în momente mai agitate prin birou, sper că au reușit să vadă dincolo de ritmul intens și să înțeleagă pasiunea, energia și satisfacțiile reale pe care le aduce această profesie.
