World Day of Social Justice 2025. Social Justice – A Collective and Transgenerational Project

February 2025

by Roxana Rizoiu

These days, social justice seems to be a slogan so often repeated that it gradually loses its value as a fundamental principle of society. Yet, it remains a red thread that should motivate the state’s actions that each society has mandated to organize things to fulfill the general interest.

Although we are all equal before the law, at least in principle, in reality, we are very different. We come from various backgrounds, we have diverse abilities, and life shapes us through unique experiences. All these differences make us a group in which we complement each other and in which humanity evolves for better or worse.

It’s a common sight to say that “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link,” and we see proof of this every day—whether it’s a worn-out bicycle chain breaking in the middle of a race or an exhausted driver causing a tragic accident.

Solidarity is an intrinsic human trait. Every member of society, in their own way and with their unique abilities, contributes to the strength of the whole. However, when an individual or a group is ignored, neglecting their voices impacts society as a whole—whether in the short term, as in the case of the fatigued driver, or in the long term, as seen in restricted access to education.

A fair society must ensure its members adhere to essential values such as respect for human rights, the fight against discrimination, and access to education and basic services. More importantly, it must give them real opportunities to exercise these rights. It is crucial to identify the weakest link and offer it the right support to fulfill its social role.

Ensuring social justice is a collective, transgenerational project on which humanity’s well-being depends. Every step forward in this endeavor strengthens the entire chain.

To bring this imperative into focus, the United Nations celebrates World Day of Social Justice on February 20, and we are proud to infuse our actions with these vital principles.
