March 2025
On March 15, we mark World Consumer Rights Day, an opportunity to debate and identify viable and realistic courses of action that protect consumer rights while maintaining a healthy and sustainable business environment. It is also an opportunity to remind ourselves that, as consumers, we have the right to:
- Safety: Products and services must meet standards that make them safe.
- Information: We have the right to clear and accurate information about the products we buy.
- Choice: Access to a competitive market allows us to choose from various products and services.
- Listening: Consumers’ opinions must be heard and considered in the decision-making process of producers and sellers.
- Indemnification: We are entitled to compensation if purchased products or services harm us.
- Education: Continuous information is essential to make responsible decisions as consumers.
- A healthy environment: We have the right to live and work in an environment that does not endanger our health and well-being.
- Meeting basic needs: Guaranteed access to essential products and services.
Why is it important to celebrate Consumer Day?
- Awareness: It helps us better understand our rights and demand that they be respected.
- Protection: Strengthens the mechanisms through which consumers can act to protect their rights.
- Responsibility: It constantly brings up the need to make informed decisions and encourages us to be responsible consumers.
- Change: It is part of the ecosystem meant to contribute to creating a fairer and more transparent market for all involved.
World Consumer Rights Day reminds us that consumer protection is a fundamental right and an essential pillar for building a sustainable economy. It is an opportunity to show appreciation for the suppliers of goods and services, not a few, who put consumer safety and satisfaction first. Finally, it is an opportunity to recognize the challenges we face and the opportunities to innovate and create a transparent and accountable commercial and legal framework.
